Our Veterans - My Heroes!!

It has been a long time since my last post. However, I just had to make time today to say how much I appreciate and love our veterans. I was on the look-out for them yesterday as I ran some errands - hoping to express my appreciation to each one I saw. As I headed into the Farm & Home store, I saw the first one. He was in a wheelchair, wearing his military cap and being pushed by his family members. It took me a few moments to get his attention, but once I did, I thanked him and let him know that his service was not forgotten. He graciously accepted my words and as we both walked in, he got a mischevious smile on his face and said, "We had a lot of fun at times serving. At times..." and his voice stopped. It was clear that he had used these good memories to help balance out the pain of those memories that would never go away and could never be painted in a favorable light. I went about my business in the store and as I made my way toward the check out, I saw the second one. He and his wife were in the clothing dept. and he was wearing a cap with the Navy insignia (I know this because it says "Navy" on it : )). I made my way to him and thanked him for his service. He begins telling me that he had a good breakfast (free) at the local Hy-Vee store. Then he starts talking about how todays kids don't understand/appreciate all the veterans have been through. He does not say this with any anger. He goes on to justify them by saying something to the effect of "How could they". He explains that he was 17 years old in 1944 and was deployed. As I check out, I ask the cashier if they have had a lot of veterans come through. She said a few since she started working about an hour ago. I remind her, "Be sure to love on them."

I don't know if it is true that these men are "the greatest generation". I know that they are great in my mind. I am overwhelmed and humbled when I think of all they sacrificed for my freedom. I have yet to find one that is proud of themselves for doing it. While they are proud of this country and their fellow soldiers, at times, the concensus seems to be that they only did their duty. So what is ours? I believe it is to teach our children and their children about these men and women and to do our best to honor them and bless them. Scripture tells us that there is "no greater love than to lay down your life for your brother." We have been loved by thousands in the most significant way possible. So...next time you see a veteran or military man or woman of any age, be sure to take the time to thank them and be sure to explain to your children the significance of their service.
